Calling all clay enthusiasts! Inspired by the whimsical creatures of Funk Artist David Gilhooly, this workshop will unleash your inner artist as you learn the magic of transforming clay into your favorite animals. No matter your creature preference or artistic experience, this workshop is designed for everyone. We'll explore fundamental techniques like scoring, slipping, and pinching to build a menagerie of amazing animals, all while adhering to essential art standards. It's sure to be a wild (and educational) time!
We will start by sharing how altered books can be used in a beginning art classroom in order to introduce (or enhance) students’ knowledge of the elements and principles of design. I will share how I utilize altered book lessons to introduce a larger unit focusing on an element or principle of design and share examples. Then, we will create a 2-page “altered book” spread with a sample element of design so teachers can take a finished page home to use as an example in their own classroom.
This is Middle Level sharing lesson session where each participant will bring a lesson they want to share. All participants will meet in quick 3 minute elevator pitches to share their lessons and trade them. Bring one lesson, take home a bunch of them ready to teach in your own classroom.
Local Artist, Dustin Timbrook, presents his work. Timbook describes himself as a Renaissance Man, a creative jack of all trades. He grew up in Montgomery, Ala., and attended the University of Montevallo, a small liberal arts college near Birmingham. He worked in Huntsville for a decade, working for Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment.
Before moving to Tucker with his wife, Molly, in 2021, the pair ran a small toy company in Huntsville, Ala. Timbrook handmade a game called Hedge Lord, which blew up in the maker space and game-con world.
The toy shop was very hands-on and there was confusion about how COVID was transmitted in the beginning, said Timbrook, so he and Molly shifted gears. They moved to Atlanta, and he pursued his desire to work on film and TV sets.
As a freelance artist, Timbrook creates handmade, specialty props for film sets. For “Just Beyond,” a comedy-horror show filmed in Tucker, he recently made a decrepit-looking conspiracy board, and for an upcoming Netflix series called “Florida Man” he created a mural and large sculptures.
Join us to learn about contemporary ceramic artists and explore the fascinating world of nudibranch sea slug vases. This workshop will be led by two experienced ceramic artist-educators, who have worked at both primary and secondary levels. During the workshop, you will have the opportunity to create a hand-built piece and take it back to your classroom, along with a comprehensive lesson plan. This is an excellent chance to enhance your skills and knowledge of ceramics in a fun and interactive way.
In this workshop we will use modpodge/acrylic medium, citrasolv, and gelli plates to create phototransfers. We will then use different medias to add to the prints and talk about how to incorporate the lesson into different types of visual arts classes (photography, drawing, painting, and even pottery). Everyone will leave with multiple examples.
Don't lose the A at a STEM school! We will look at different models, engage in observation and experimentation, collaborate and make some art. I will be redelivering information and resources from the NAEA Fostering STEAM workshop I attended in Jan 2024.
This class will give several clay project ideas for younger children, steps on how to create the different projects, kiln answers, material management for clay, organizational ideas, and question/answer opportunity to someone who has been working with little kids and clay for 17 years.
