HMA Tour: GIANTS
Thursday October 17, 2024 11:30am - 12:30pm EDT
Take a docent-led tour of the GIANTS exhibit.

The High will be the exclusive venue in the Southeastern United States to present the first major exhibition of the world-class art collection owned by musical and cultural icons Swizz Beatz (Kasseem Dean) and Alicia Keys.
Organized by the Brooklyn Museum, where it debuted in February, Giants will feature a focused selection from the couple’s holdings, spotlighting works by multigenerational Black diasporic artists, from 20th century legends such as Nick Cave, Lorna Simpson, and Barkley L. Hendricks, to artists of a younger generation including Deana Lawson, Amy Sherald, and Ebony G. Patterson, who are expanding the legacies of those who came before them.
Giants stands as a testament to the Deans’ ethos of “collecting and preserving the culture of ourselves for ourselves, now and into the future.” Through approximately 115 objects, including 98 major artworks, the exhibition will trace the evolution of an audacious and ambitious collection and explore the ways in which the featured artists and their work have grappled with societal issues, embraced monumentality, and made a palpable impact on the art canon. In addition to paintings, photographs, and sculptures, the galleries will include noteworthy examples of the Deans’ early non-art collecting interests, including albums, musical equipment, and BMX bikes, along with related ephemera.

Learn from local artist SAMI JACQ: Participants will learn about the history of floral symbolism within artwork, focusing on the Dutch Golden Age. She feel deeply in love with colors and creative expression, which led her to art school. In 2021, she earned her BFA in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Sami now focuses on painting dramatic, detailed flowers, commenting on life's fragility and including indertones of her personal faith through the symbolism of nature. She continues to expand her portfolio in the Atlanta area.

HMA Tour: Idyllic Space
Thursday October 17, 2024 1:00pm - 2:20pm EDT
Take a docent-led tour of the High Museum's Idyllic Space exhibit by the artist Tyler Mitchell.

Tyler Mitchell is an American photographer and filmmaker renowned for his tender and innovative portrayals that center Black self-determination and empowerment through scenes of love, leisure, and camaraderie. Mitchell rose to global prominence in 2018 when he photographed Beyoncé for the September issue of Vogue as the first Black artist to shoot the cover in the magazine’s then 126-year history. He explores style, beauty, and identity through playfully theatrical, expressive photographs that seamlessly blend his fashion and conceptual work.
Drawing inspiration from the landscapes, homes, and communities of suburban Atlanta where he was raised, this homecoming exhibition features work made from 2017 to 2024 and considers Mitchell’s exploration of themes such as family lineage, play, companionship, the natural world, and domestic spaces. His lens captures the essence of relationships, weaving an intimate narrative of shared experiences.

Caregivers, Creativity, and Conversation
Thursday October 17, 2024 2:30pm - 3:20pm EDT
Based on a case study conducted at UGA ("Caregivers, Creativity, and Conversation: Investigating Place and Belonging at a Rural School Through Artmaking", Goeckel, 2024), this workshop explores strategies for using artmaking to engage caregivers and families from your school community in meaningful dialogue that promotes a sense of belonging, place, and community. While this research was investigated in a rural elementary school setting, it has applications across grade levels and settings. This workshop will discuss specific strategies and examples for facilitating parent and caregiver workshops, school-wide family events, and more that encourage intentional listening to learn more about families, establish strong family-school connections to build community and belonging, and weave artmaking into a variety of school experiences for students and families. This workshop will also give a brief glimpse into what Victoria calls her "Dollar General Art curriculum" that strives to make artmaking accessible and engaging for families, whether they are at home or at school.

Local artist, Liz Alzona, presents about her work and leads a mixed media collage workshop. Liz Alzona is an award-winning, published artist and gifted storyteller. Inspired by extraordinary individuals and their stories of struggle and triumph, Liz uses bold and vibrant mixed media collages to ignite inspiration and foster connection. Her work emphasizes the desires, dreams, and legacies of both renowned figures and unsung heroes. Raised in Chicago by artist parents, Liz's passion for art began at a young age. She studied art alongside biology (B.S.), and neurophysiology (M.S.) at Loyola University Chicago, seamlessly integrating science, art, and narrative in her work. Currently based in Atlanta, Liz's work is featured in both private and public collections, including the James Clerk Maxwell foundation in Edinburgh, Scotland.

"We Want To Do More Than Survive" (Bettina Love)
Thursday October 17, 2024 2:30pm - 3:50pm EDT
“We Want To Do More Than Survive” We want to do more than survive is the title of the best seller written by Bettina Love. Her research centers around the study of the inequalities in the educational system. The ability to have the difficult conversation about the shortcomings of the educational system regarding minority students and their failing hopes and dreams. The discussion and hands on activities allow space for anyone who wishes to make a genuine change in our current systemic failures. The activities and discussion invite participants to engage in the journey toward healing, justice and revolution. Examination of both We Want To Do More Than Survive and Punished for Dreaming is an invitation to listen, critique, heal, and fight for the schools and world we deserve. This opportunity provides space for reflection, rage, sorrow, dreams, and questions.Difficult discussions encourage you to feel, think deeply, and engage in meaningful dialogue and action. To address the inclusion aspect more specifically, We will also examine how neurodivergent children are valued and seen. The goal is for participants to leave with a renewed sense of hope and ideas to address equity, diversity, and inclusion in their personal lives and educational forums shedding the fear of having those difficult conversations that foster systemic change.

Textile Landscapes
Thursday October 17, 2024 2:30pm - 3:50pm EDT
This workshop is designed to give you all the knowledge and teaching resources to complete a "Textile Landscape" with your students! In this lesson, students will learn the parts of a landscape, and how to create depth using the foreground, middle ground, and background, but they will also learn how to sew! I teach my students a simple running stitch and whip stich to complete the project. Once they get the hang of it, they never want to stop! I still have students come in with ripped hoodies every now and then and ask if they can borrow a needle and thread to sew it up. More advanced students can also learn more challenging embroidery stitches to add detail on top of their landscapes as well. There are tons of opportunities in this project to differentiate for different skill levels. This project came about because I had a LOT of small scrap fabrics and fabrics with irregular cuts that could not be used for our more traditional fiber arts units, and I felt that they were going to waste. I was sorting through them when I found several pieced that reminded me of mountains and other landscape features. Since that day, I have done this project several times and it is always a huge success! The students have gotten more and more creative with using fabric with pattern and texture, and adding buttons, ribbon, and embroidery. It is always fun to see what they come up with. So, please join me if you are interested in receiving those resources and want to come make some beautiful fiber art masterpieces! Lets sew some scraps together to make something greater than the sum of it's parts!

Utilizing Altered Book Lessons to Discover and Enrich Art Basics
Thursday October 17, 2024 2:30pm - 3:50pm EDT
We will start by sharing how altered books can be used in a beginning art classroom in order to introduce (or enhance) students’ knowledge of the elements and principles of design. I will share how I utilize altered book lessons to introduce a larger unit focusing on an element or principle of design and share examples. Then, we will create a 2-page “altered book” spread with a sample element of design so teachers can take a finished page home to use as an example in their own classroom.

HMA Tour: GIANTS
Thursday October 17, 2024 4:00pm - 4:50pm EDT

Thursday October 17, 2024 4:00pm - 4:50pm EDT
Meet at the bottom of the ramp in the Atrium.

Through recognizing the benefits of teaching with contemporary art (Hamlin & Fusaro, 2018; Scott, 2020; Marshall et al. 2021; Sickler-Voigt, 2020; Gude, 2013; Bae 2023; Thulson & Stewart, 2021; Tuazon, 2011) as well as the challenges (Bae, 2023; Marshall & Donahue, 2014), this session will provide resources and guidance in developing a semester’s curriculum that directly connects to contemporary artists and practices. Session participants will receive planning materials including a sample curriculum map, curriculum outline, contemporary artist lists, and time will be spent collaboratively developing individual curriculum outlines.

Using Virtual Simulation with Pre-service Teachers
Thursday October 17, 2024 4:00pm - 4:50pm EDT
The presentation explores the increase in confidence and self-efficacy in using Mixed Reality Simulations (MRS) to prepare pre-service teachers. Currently our pre-service candidates have field experiences, and clinical experiences of being in the classroom with students and the mentor teacher. They are not allowed to sit in and observe or participate in parent teacher conferences, 504 meetings, IEP meetings, student behavior/discipline meetings, or communications with parents (outside of those volunteering). The Mixed Reality Simulator provides a safe (virtual) environment for pre-service teacher to practice these conversations, record, watch, reflect, discuss, and learn from their experience. Pre-service teachers stand in front of a screen and talk directly with the simulation (see the picture). The simulation has been preset with a scenario. For example: the scenario may be a parent/teacher conference where the student is being unsafe in the classroom, or bullying another student or the parent is complaining about the student’s grades. The experience is recorded. The pre-service teacher participating then watches and writes a reflection about the experience, challenges, etc. There will be a MRS experience at the beginning of the semester as well as the end of the semester, allowing students time to learn, have their field experience in-between. Additionally, there will be class discussions on the experiences that will be audio recorded with field notes, to allow for comparison on the pre and post experiences. Student reflections will be artifacts of data as well. The presentation will include a sample recording of the MRS experience as well as reflections from the students and an analysis of the student reflections. The hope is this new technology will build confidence and better prepare our pre-service teachers.

Local Artist, Catlanta: Free Art Movement
Friday October 18, 2024 9:00am - 9:50am EDT
catlanta: Learn about the free art movement through a presentation about Catlanta kittens and the #fafatl community. After the presentation, participants will create a kitten of their own to take home or hide for others to find. Catlanta aka Rory Hawkins, is an Atlanta based artist primarily known for his colorful and fun paintings of cats. Though he was born in New Orleans, Rory has been a lifelong resident of the metro Atlanta area. Rory attended Georgia State University as a Berner Scholarship recipient where he received a B.A. in Studio Art in 2010 primarily focusing on printmaking during his studies. Since graduation, Rory has produced hundreds of paintings under the moniker ‘Catlanta’, a name that grew from a few cats Rory spray painted on the walls of underpasses and abandoned properties throughout the city of Atlanta in 2011. The cats, three-legged with dots for eyes and hearts on their chests, quickly became known as an Atlanta street art character popping up all over town. Not interested in being labeled a vandal and inspired by nondestructive art movements like Free Art Friday, Rory transitioned from painting cats on walls to creating small hand painted wooden cutouts of his iconic three-legged cat (called kittens) which he hides around town for anyone to find. Rory shares photo clues of the piece’s location and invites his followers to track down and keep any kitten that they can find. Since he began hiding art pieces in 2011, Rory has shared over 1,000 pieces of art via photo scavenger hunt. These ‘art drops’ are meant to highlight the people, places, and events that make Atlanta and other cities unique while inspiring exploration and engagement within the community where the artwork is hidden.

In addition to painting and hiding cats, Rory is an accomplished muralist with large outdoor works in Atlanta, Chattanooga, and Costa Rica. He has worked with several local and national brands on a variety of projects from label designs to chalkboard art and has volunteered with organizations like One Love Generation and Paint Love to lead art workshops for Atlanta area students. He lives in Ormewood Park, and enjoys evening walks around his neighborhood, Atlanta sports teams (not you, Cobb Braves), and taking hot baths.

Establishing Connection Through Collaborative Studio Making: Working Alongside Students as an Artist
Friday October 18, 2024 9:00am - 9:50am EDT
How does working alongside students during studio time build relationships and foster a community within the studio? For art educators Morgan Clifton and Victoria Goeckel, their job as art educators is to nurture connection and collaboration with and amongst students by working alongside them as artists and mentors, beyond the traditional interpretation of “teaching”. When students step into their classrooms, they are transported to a space that serves as a shared studio for the teacher-artist and the student artists. For Morgan and Victoria, this practice shapes up differently within their respective high school and elementary spaces. For Morgan, this practice has evolved into a treasured tradition after a student jokingly asked her if they could be her for the day, igniting a revolution in collaborative studio making. Each Friday, a student has the opportunity to take on the mantle of teacher for the day, visit peers one-on-one, check in, talk about ideas, offer feedback and suggestions, while Morgan creates alongside the other students. For Victoria, this practice is best embodied in the annual school mural that is created with the year’s fifth grade students. Each year the fifth grade students spend months planning, drafting, and voting on a new school mural, followed by priming, sketching, and painting the mural before revealing it to the school community each May. Students participate in each step alongside Victoria, learning the practical skills of a working artist and finding permanent ownership and legacy of a space in the school. Intentional communal art education experiences such as these, when students and teachers share their workspace and artistic practice, encourages conversation and exploration of the artmaking process between peers and teachers alike as artists working collaboratively. This workshop will explore these practices and help other educators seek out these opportunities within their own classrooms.

Papercrafting Without Limits With Local Artist Dustin Timbrook
Friday October 18, 2024 9:00am - 10:20am EDT
Local Artist, Dustin Timbrook, presents his work. Timbook describes himself as a Renaissance Man, a creative jack of all trades. He grew up in Montgomery, Ala., and attended the University of Montevallo, a small liberal arts college near Birmingham. He worked in Huntsville for a decade, working for Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment.

Before moving to Tucker with his wife, Molly, in 2021, the pair ran a small toy company in Huntsville, Ala. Timbrook handmade a game called Hedge Lord, which blew up in the maker space and game-con world.

The toy shop was very hands-on and there was confusion about how COVID was transmitted in the beginning, said Timbrook, so he and Molly shifted gears. They moved to Atlanta, and he pursued his desire to work on film and TV sets.

As a freelance artist, Timbrook creates handmade, specialty props for film sets. For “Just Beyond,” a comedy-horror show filmed in Tucker, he recently made a decrepit-looking conspiracy board, and for an upcoming Netflix series called “Florida Man” he created a mural and large sculptures.

Puppet characters, props, and sets can be made from simple materials, much of which is cheap or free: wood, paper, metal, leather, cardboard, cardstock,, fabric, chopsticks, rods, dowels, cotton batting, string, pipe cleaners, wires.

The Power of Printmaking
Friday October 18, 2024 9:00am - 10:20am EDT
As the world continuously evolves at a rapid pace, we’re asked to look at traditional mediums in new and innovative ways. How can we develop an exchange among these disciplines traditionally overlooked and/or over generalized within discourse to provide a deeper understanding of their relevance, flexibility, nuances, and intimacy in today’s commercialized, digital culture in tandem with younger audiences through practice. All will be revealed in a short talk detailing research that addresses these fundamental questions, followed by a workshop where participants create their very own print through a fusion of digital and traditional printmaking processes to produce various results!

For the purposes of this presentation, I am looking at this topic through the lens of… or B. …it is important to understand the lens through which I view the evolution of my journey concerning this topic. Altoid Pinhole Long Exposure Camera
Friday October 18, 2024 10:40am - 12:00pm EDT
In this workshop we will be making a basic pinhole camera constructed out of an Altoid Mint tin. After painting, drilling holes, and sanding your camera, black and white darkroom photography paper will be placed inside of the camera. The cameras are then left to expose from anywhere between two days and 365 days! The longer the exposure, the more light trails from the sun you will record. Due to this extremely long exposure, moving objects such as cars and people become obsolete and water becomes very still and flattens out. Mysterious colors including reds, greens, blues, etc., appear from the black and white photo paper. Your image on the photo paper will be a “negative”, so you will need to invert it to make it a positive image. During the session, we will discuss how to keep the camera stationary for the duration of the exposure and show examples of successful exposures.

Using river reeds, you will follow instructions to create a vessel of your own. You can choose to add color or beads to your design. I invite you to bring in your own charms and small toys, any things that the reed can pass through, thereby being woven into your basket (this lesson pairs well with polymer clay projects). It gets a little wet sometimes because we must soak the wood in water for malleability. Get ready to have some fun!

HMA Tour: GIANTS
Friday October 18, 2024 4:00pm - 4:50pm EDT

Friday October 18, 2024 4:00pm - 4:50pm EDT
Meet at the bottom of the ramp in the Atrium.

Grace Kisa is a Kenyan-American artist based in Atlanta, Georgia.
A multimedia artist whose primary expression is sculpture, her process is mprovisational, combination of creative play and problem solving. The materials that she uses vary from clay, metal, wood, fiber, and resin. with a focus on recycling and repurposing ordinary objects .
Her work draws inspiration from the experiences of a childhood spent in Kenya, Ethiopia, Botswana, Virginia, and as a practicing artist Georgia. By taking what is familiar and transforming it, she creates narratives that engage various histories while working through concepts of intersectional identities, examining the processes of migration and cultural exchange beyond borders. Particular attention is given to ideas of comfort, alienation, adaptation and assimilation. Set against how that relates in a globalized world.
Grace graduated from the Art Institute in Atlanta, Georgia and has worked as a professional artist for over 20 years exhibiting in Solo and group exhibitions across the United States.

Super Symmetrical Drawings
Saturday October 19, 2024 9:00am - 10:20am EDT
This is a technique I use for every grade that I teach. I do a different symmetrical drawing for each of my grade levels. I would love to be able to show examples and go over the directions of how to draw bugs, owls, and dragons and have the teachers choose which of the three that they wish to try. Even though they will leave with only one drawing they will have a new technique and several ideas to use with symmetry. I have had great success with this project with all levels of students and the kids always leave with a project that they are proud of. They will use simple shapes to do a sketch on half of the paper. After the pencil sketch is complete they will trace all lines with sharpie and go to a window with pencil. They will flip the image over and the light at the window will serve as a light table to trace a perfectly symmetrical image on the other side. (Most classes do not have funding for more that one or two light tables so this gives access to a light source for all students.) They will trace the other side with sharpie and have an amazing symmetrical drawing completed in a single class period. I have pictures to show this process in use and tons of student examples of successful and beautiful drawings.

Dr. Helen Fleming Stone Scholarship Silent Auction
Saturday October 19, 2024 9:00am - 12:00pm EDT
The Dr. Helen Fleming Stone Scholarship is the highest honor and largest scholarship bestowed on a National Art Honor Society student by the Georgia Art Education Association.  Dr. Stone established and built the scholarship through diligent hard work and tireless effort.  As an artist she was a gifted sculptor and potter, so she sold her work to fund the scholarship.  By 2006, she had raised the impressive sum of $60,000 – one pot at a time.  Following her death in 2007, GAEA assumed responsibility for assisting the Stone family with the fundraising efforts, hosting a silent auction of donated artwork by GAEA members and their students.  The scholarship endowment has grown to more than $88,000 and will continue assisting Georgia’s young gifted artists in their studies for many generations to come.

From Traditional to Digital: Using the self-portrait to explore Identity
Saturday October 19, 2024 10:40am - 12:00pm EDT
In this workshop, we will present a project progression that we use in 3rd - 5th grade art that focuses on the self portrait as way for students to explore identity, representation and personal story telling.
